Integration of the Peusijuek Tradition as Local Wisdom in Islamic Religious Education: A Case Study at MAS Darul Ulum Al-Waliyyah and Paya Meuneng Village

Abstract

This study aims to analyze a model of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) based on local wisdom through the peusijuek tradition in Gampong Paya Meuneng, Peusangan Subdistrict, Bireuen Regency, as well as its implementation at MAS Darul Ulum Al-Waliyyah. Peusijuek is one of Aceh’s cultural heritage traditions rich in religious, social, and educational values. This study employs a qualitative approach using field research methods. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving religious and traditional leaders, PAI teachers, the madrasah principal, and students. The results indicate that the peusijuek tradition can serve as an effective medium for PAI instruction because it embodies values such as gratitude to Allah SWT, prayer, the strengthening of Islamic brotherhood (ukhuwah Islamiyah), respect for parents, and character development among students. This learning model is implemented through the integration of PAI curriculum content with local cultural practices, discussions of Islamic values embedded in peusijuek, and contextual learning based on community experiences. This model demonstrates a positive contribution to students’ understanding of Islamic teachings while preserving local cultural identity. This study recommends that PAI learning based on local wisdom be further developed as a contextually meaningful educational innovation in various regions across Indonesia.
