This study aims to describe the implementation of the Pegon class in improving the literacy of new students at Pondok Pesantren Darussa’adah 3 Kedung. The background of this research lies in the diverse educational backgrounds of new students who have not yet mastered Pegon script, while all learning activities in the pesantren such as bandongan, tarbiyah, and sorogan rely on Pegon as the main medium. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that the Pegon class serves as a standardization program for new students, with a learning method that emphasizes practice rather than theory. Students’ responses to the Pegon class were highly positive, as they felt supported in understanding classical Islamic texts. They admitted that the Pegon class has improved their writing skills according to Pegon rules and Arabic grammar, enabling them to better participate in religious learning activities. Despite challenges such as tight schedules and large class sizes, the commitment of the pesantren leaders, teachers, and students’ enthusiasm are key factors for success.
