ANALYSIS OF CAT CALLING BEHAVIOR OF HEGEMONIC MASCULINITY AND ITS HANDLING

Abstrak

Catcalling based on hegemonic masculinity often occurs in vocational high school environments, causing discomfort for female students and reflecting detrimental gender dominance. This study aims to: (1) Identify the forms and patterns of hegemonic masculinity catcalling behavior towards female students of Law and Social Sciences at SMKN 10 Makassar; (2) Analyze the perceptions of MA and MN students regarding this behavior and its impacts; (3) Reveal the psychological and social factors perceived by the victims; and (4) Explore efforts to address this behavior. The study used a qualitative clinical case study approach. The results showed that forms of catcalling include teasing whistles and sexual comments that impact social anxiety and area avoidance. Behavioral patterns reflect body objectification, spatial dominance, collective action, and social intimidation as manifestations of hegemonic masculinity. Perpetrators' initial perceptions showed normalization of jokes, masculine superiority, peer validation, and minimal empathy towards the victims. Victims experienced anxiety, fear, and restricted movement. After coaching, changes occurred in the perpetrators in the form of decreased false courage, the emergence of awareness of impact, self-reflection, and changes in response. Addressing efforts include CBT counseling, gender equality education, and specific regulations. The conclusion is that catcalling reinforces gender inequality and requires ongoing intervention.
